English Language Support (Intermediate)

An Individualised Approach to Language Learning

Our English Language Support (Intermediate) programme is designed with the younger learners in mind. Our pupils may have had limited exposure to the English language, and this approach is designed to make the learning experience an enjoyable one. In collaboration with class teachers, our ELS Specialist will support pupils through small group or individual ‘pull-out’ sessions, as well as with ‘push-in’ support. The nature, and number of ‘pull-out’ and ‘push-in’ sessions will vary, depending on the level of support, timetabling and pupil’s needs.

Years 5 and 6

Pull-Out Sessions

During ‘pull-out’ sessions, pupils receive intensive and tailored English language instruction within a 1-on-1 or small group setting outside of the main classroom. Depending on the pupil’s needs, he/she may be pulled-out from different subjects based on the linguistic difficulty of the subject. The 1-on-1 or small group setting allows pupils to practise speaking skills, ask questions and receive personalised instruction from the ELS Specialist, with the teaching approach tailored specifically to the learning needs.

Push-In Classes

During ‘push-in’ sessions, pupils will learn alongside their classroom peers and also receive in-class support from the ELS Specialist. Alongside the subject teacher and classroom instruction, the ELS Specialist will provide support in the context of the content that is being studied in the classroom environment. ELS pupils gain language support, while studying the core curriculum with their peers, promoting opportunities to collaborate, practise social communication skills and develop confidence in their linguistic abilities.
