YEAR 1 – YEAR 6 (BEGINNER)
The Preparatory Course for Primary School (PCP) is designed for beginner EAL pupils in Year 1 to Year 6, helping them transition into the British curriculum at Brighton College (Singapore). The programme focuses on developing the English language skills necessary to thrive academically while embracing the school’s core values of kindness, confidence, and curiosity.
In an intensive term-long programme, pupils engage with a British-style curriculum while improving their English proficiency. Our dedicated teachers foster a caring environment where well-being is prioritised, and pupils are encouraged to reach their full potential. The structured group-learning format promotes collaboration and respect for diversity, allowing pupils to build long-lasting friendships and deepen their understanding of the world.
The PCP programme offers intensive English as an Additional Language lessons aligned to the British curriculum, covering core subjects such as mathematics, science, English, and humanities. Pupils also experience Physical Education, drama, and art.
Each class consists of 30 pupils, with three teachers, including an English Language Support (ELS) specialist and a Teaching Assistant (TA), assigned to support each group. Two classes are created for Years 1 to 3 and Years 4 to 6, which are later split into smaller groups.
During the admissions process, a pupil’s English proficiency will be assessed using the WIDA or SLATE Plus test, followed by an interview. All applicants must meet the entry requirements of Brighton College (Singapore).
Pupils take an age-appropriate Cognitive Ability Test (CAT) and provide previous school reports and recommendations.
Brighton College (Singapore)’s academic year runs from August to June across three terms. Pupils may join the PCP course at the start of any term, provided they meet the entry criteria.
Upon successful completion of the PCP programme, pupils are placed in mainstream classes. Those requiring further language support will continue with integrated support within mainstream classes.
